Lower Tox Lifestyle: Women
Reconnect with a less toxic life
While our world contains countless synthetic chemicals, we all have the power to reduce our toxic load. For women especially, this matters deeply. Many everyday toxins are endocrine disruptors that interfere directly with hormones, potentially affecting mood, fertility, weight, energy, and long-term health. The good news? Small, gradual swaps can make a profound difference.
What You Put ON Your Body
Your skin is your largest organ and absorbs far more than we realise. Personal care products can be endocrine disruptors, mimicking or blocking natural hormones thus contributing to what's known as toxic burden. You can maintain a beautiful, feminine grooming routine. The goal isn't deprivation; it's choosing products that love your body back.
Fragrance: one of the most pervasive hidden toxins. The word ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ can legally conceal hundreds of undisclosed chemicals.
Easy swaps:
· synthetic perfumes for essential oil blends, botanical perfumes, or flower waters (rose, neroli, jasmine)
· fragranced lotions and body wash for unscented or naturally scented formulas
· fragranced feminine hygiene products for unscented, organic cotton alternatives.
Deodorant: Conventional antiperspirants contain aluminium compounds applied daily near lymph nodes and breast tissue.
· Try magnesium-based natural deodorants or other natural options
· baking soda and arrowroot blends handmade or bought
· crystal mineral salts instead.
Allow 2–4 weeks for your body to adjust as this transition can take some time.
Skincare & Makeup: Avoid parabens, SLS, synthetic dyes, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.
· Choose oil cleansers with jojoba, coconut or castor oil
· moisturisers with rosehip oil or seabuckthorn
· mineral-based makeup
· natural tinted lip products as lips are one of the highest areas of product ingestion.
Hair Care:
· Choose sulphate-free, fragrance-free shampoos
· nourishing hair masks with coconut, argan, or castor oil
· and arrowroot or rice starch dry shampoos over aerosol sprays.
To check your products, use the Think Dirty app, EWG Skin Deep database, or INCI Decoder. While there is no need to memorise every ingredient, you’ll get to know the nasties.
What You Wear
Synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, acrylic and rayon are essentially plastics derived from petrochemicals, treated with dyes and flame retardants that sit against your skin all day. They also shed microplastics with every wash. This matters most for clothing worn closest to the body: underwear, sleepwear, activewear, and bras.
Fabrics to embrace:
Organic cotton - breathable and pesticide-free; ideal for everyday wear and underwear
Linen - naturally antibacterial, breathable, and cooling
Silk - hypoallergenic and temperature-regulating; ideal for sleepwear and lingerie
Wool & merino - moisture-wicking and odour-resistant; great for cooler months
Bamboo linen - soft and sustainable; choose mechanically processed over viscose
Fabrics best to not purchase: polyester, nylon, acrylic, viscose/rayon, and conventional (non-organic) cotton which is one of the most heavily pesticide-sprayed crops in the world.
You don't need to replace your entire wardrobe. Start with items closest to your skin, explore second-hand and vintage clothing. Look for GOTS or OEKO-TEX certifications when buying new.
What You Put IN Your Body
Food is medicine but modern food is also a source of chronic low-grade chemical exposure.
Choose organic produce where possible and refer to the Dirty Dozen list
Avoid GMO foods and opt for whole, minimally processed ingredients
Filter your water to remove chlorine, fluoride, and heavy metals
Reduce seed oils (canola, soybean, sunflower) and cook with ghee, or coconut oil and use olive oil when not heating
Eat seasonally and locally — closer to the earth, closer to optimal
Plastic & Home Environment
Plastics leach BPA and phthalates into food and water, particularly when heated. Store food in glass or stainless steel, never heat food in plastic, swap plastic bottles for glass, copper or stainless steel, and replace cling wrap with beeswax wraps or silicone covers.
For a cleaner home overall:
Replace synthetic candles with beeswax or soy varieties with essential oils
Use non-toxic cleaning products or make your own with vinegar, bicarbonate soda, and essential oils
Open windows daily as indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air and use an air filter if you live in an urban environment
Add peace lilies or snake plants to gently filter the air
Slow Down and Protect Your Nervous System
Chronic stress is one of the most overlooked toxins of modern life. Cortisol dysregulation disrupts other hormones, and many women are running on empty.
Rituals for a slower, more intentional life:
Morning sunlight standing on the earth prior to use of screens - even 10 minutes makes a difference
Gentle movement: walking, Pilates and swimming
Protecting sleep as sacred: dim lights after sunset, use blue-light blocking glasses and screens off before bed. Aim to keep your sleep space device free so no phone next to your head while you sleep!
Say no with grace when you feel overwhelmed or like rest is needed. Boundaries are a form of self-care
Time in nature, weekly if possible. Make beach and bush walks a reward.
Take Back Control
We can’t avoid all toxins, but the goal is a gradual, joyful shift toward a life where your body is supported rather than burdened. Choose one or two things to change this month. Read labels. Ask questions. Trust your instincts. Use commonsense.
Your health is yours, and living naturally is one of the most powerful acts of self-care a woman can choose.
